Companion pairing
neutralFig + Strawberry
No documented effect
Why this pairing
Strawberries can grow at the dripline of figs without significant competition.
Practical considerations
Fig and strawberry occupy different vertical layers of the garden, which makes the dripline planting approach workable in practice. Strawberries, with their shallow root systems, can be tucked at the outer edge of a fig's canopy without meaningful root competition. Soil compatibility is reasonable: both prefer well-drained, moderately fertile ground, though figs are notably more drought-tolerant once established and strawberries need consistent moisture during fruiting.
The main constraint is shade. A mature fig canopy can be substantial, and strawberries produce best with at least 6 hours of direct sun. Plant strawberries on the south or east side of the fig to capture morning and midday light. In very hot climates (zones 9 and above), some afternoon shade from the fig may actually reduce fruit scorch on strawberries during peak summer.
This pairing offers no documented allelopathic benefit or pest-suppression effect. It is neutral: a space-use decision rather than a synergistic one.
