Companion pairing

beneficial

Almond + Borage

Plant together

Why this pairing

Borage extends pollinator support during almond's early bloom (often before most other nectar sources), improving fruit set in self-incompatible varieties.

Practical considerations

Almond blooms earlier than almost any other orchard crop, often in late winter when forage is scarce and native pollinator populations are just emerging. Most commercial varieties are self-incompatible, meaning reliable fruit set depends on adequate cross-pollination during this narrow window. Borage established in fall or started early indoors can be blooming by late winter in zones 7 through 9, providing a consistent nectar source that keeps foraging bees active around the trees during peak bloom.

Spacing: plant borage in the open ground between tree rows rather than directly under the canopy, where light competition becomes an issue as trees leaf out. Both crops prefer well-drained soil with moderate fertility; neither tolerates waterlogged ground. The pairing adds the most value in small plantings with limited wild forage nearby. In sites already surrounded by early-blooming native plants or managed hives, the marginal benefit is smaller.
