Companion pairing

beneficial

Black Currant + Clover

Plant together

Why this pairing

Clover groundcover preserves moisture and supplies steady nitrogen to black currants without aggressive competition.

Practical considerations

Clover works well beneath black currants because it occupies the ground layer without competing meaningfully for canopy space or root resources. White clover (Trifolium repens) is the most practical choice: it stays low, tolerates partial shade from currant canes, and fixes atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules, releasing it gradually into the soil as the plants cycle through their growth seasons. Black currants are moderate feeders that respond well to steady, low-level nitrogen availability rather than sharp fertilizer spikes.

The pairing suits established currant plantings in zones 3 through 6, where summer drought stress is a real concern. Clover's groundcover reduces evaporation and moderates soil temperature around the shallow feeder roots. The combination is less useful in wet, poorly drained sites, where clover can mat down and encourage fungal pressure near the currant crown. Allow a few inches of clearance between clover and each cane base.
