Companion pairing
beneficialEggplant + Marigold
Plant together
Why this pairing
Marigolds deter flea beetles, eggplant's most damaging early-season pest, and suppress soil nematodes. Plant marigolds as a border around eggplant beds.
Practical considerations
Marigolds earn their place next to eggplant by targeting flea beetles, the small jumping insects that riddle young eggplant leaves with shot-hole damage before plants can establish a strong canopy. A border planting of French marigolds (Tagetes patula) around the eggplant bed provides the most consistent deterrent effect; single scattered plants contribute less. French marigolds also suppress root-knot nematodes through soil-borne compounds, a benefit most relevant in sandy soils where nematode pressure runs high.
Both crops prefer similar conditions: warm soil, full sun, and moderate moisture with good drainage. Transplant marigolds at the same time as eggplant starts, or a week earlier, so the border is established when flea beetle pressure peaks in the first weeks after transplanting. This pairing offers less advantage in cool, short seasons where flea beetle populations stay low, or in heavy clay soils where nematode pressure is not the primary concern.
