Fig and Rosemary

beneficial

Why this pairing

Rosemary tolerates the dry sites figs prefer and provides aromatic pest deterrence.

Practical considerations

Fig and rosemary share a preference for well-drained, low-fertility soil and full sun, which makes them genuinely compatible companions rather than merely tolerant ones. Rosemary planted within 3 to 5 feet of a fig benefits from the fig's canopy break in climates with hot afternoon sun, while the rosemary's aromatic oils have a documented deterrent effect on several soft-bodied insects that probe young fig growth. The pairing works best in zones 7 through 10 where both plants are perennial; in colder zones where fig is grown in a container or dies back annually, rosemary's utility as a companion diminishes. Avoid placing rosemary directly under the fig canopy where summer leaf drop creates persistent moisture. The combination is least useful in heavy clay or consistently wet soils, where rosemary will decline regardless of companion benefits.
