Companion pairing
beneficialSweet Pepper + Marigold
Plant together
Why this pairing
Marigolds deter aphids, the primary virus vector for peppers, and suppress soil nematodes. Plant as a border around pepper beds.
Practical considerations
Sweet peppers are susceptible to mosaic and other viruses transmitted by aphids, making aphid suppression a meaningful priority in pepper beds. French marigolds (Tagetes patula) are the most effective choice for this pairing; they produce root exudates that reduce soil nematode populations over a full growing season and appear to deter aphid colonization when planted as a dense border.
Plant marigolds 2 to 3 weeks before transplanting pepper seedlings so the border is established early in the season. A single row spaced 6 to 8 inches apart around the perimeter of the bed is sufficient for a standard garden plot. Both crops prefer full sun, consistent moisture, and well-drained fertile soil, so direct competition is minimal at typical planting densities.
The pairing is most useful where aphid pressure has been persistent in prior seasons or where peppers have been grown in the same bed for multiple years, allowing nematode populations to build. In short-season climates where marigolds may not reach maturity before first frost, the nematode-suppression benefit is reduced, though aphid deterrence still applies through the growing window.
