Companion pairing

beneficial

Saskatoon (Serviceberry) + Clover

Plant together

Why this pairing

Saskatoons benefit from clover's nitrogen contribution and the pollinator support clover provides during the early saskatoon bloom.

Practical considerations

Clover works well as a ground cover under or around saskatoon shrubs, primarily for two reasons: nitrogen fixation and pollinator overlap. Saskatoons bloom early in spring, often before many other plants are flowering, and clover-established ground covers can support native bee populations that carry over from the previous season. White clover (Trifolium repens) is the most practical choice given its low growth habit (under 6 inches), which avoids competing with saskatoon's root zone for water during dry spells.

This pairing suits established saskatoon plantings better than new ones. In year one or two, aggressive clover can compete for moisture and establishment nutrients, so wait until shrubs are well-rooted before underplanting. In heavier clay soils, clover's root activity can improve drainage over time, a secondary benefit in regions where saskatoons sit in poorly drained sites through spring snowmelt.
