Companion pairing
beneficialEverbearing Strawberry + Borage
Plant together
Why this pairing
Borage extends pollinator support across the long fruiting season of day-neutral strawberries.
Practical considerations
Borage pairs well with everbearing (day-neutral) strawberries because it blooms continuously through the season, keeping pollinators active during the extended fruiting windows these varieties produce from late spring through fall. The plants are compatible in most garden soils: both tolerate a wide pH range and neither is particularly heavy-feeding.
Space borage 18 to 24 inches from strawberry crowns to prevent shading, as mature borage can reach 18 to 24 inches tall and sprawl considerably. Direct-sow borage at or just before transplanting strawberries; it establishes quickly and begins flowering in 5 to 8 weeks.
The pairing is most useful in gardens where natural pollinator populations are inconsistent or where the fruiting bed is somewhat isolated from flowering borders. It is less compelling where bees are already abundant, or where space is limited, since borage self-seeds aggressively and can become weedy if not managed after flowering.
