Companion pairing

beneficial

Garlic + June-Bearing Strawberry

Plant together

Why this pairing

Garlic deters strawberry weevils and slugs. Garlic planted in fall around strawberry rows is harvested in early summer, leaving space for strawberry runners.

Practical considerations

Garlic and June-bearing strawberries pair well when planted with timing in mind. Fall-planted garlic sits dormant through winter alongside strawberry crowns, then grows actively in spring without meaningfully competing for runner space. By early summer, when June-bearers are finishing fruit set, garlic is ready to harvest, clearing row edges for runner establishment.

The pest deterrence case centers on allicin compounds that repel strawberry weevils (Anthonomus signatus) and reduce slug pressure near the soil surface. Results vary by site and are not consistently demonstrated in controlled trials, so this pairing should complement, not replace, other IPM measures.

Both crops prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0 to 6.8). Plant garlic 6 to 8 inches from strawberry crowns to avoid root competition. The pairing is less practical in tight-row systems where garlic harvest disturbs soil close to established strawberry roots.
