Jujube and Thyme
beneficial
Why this pairing
Thyme groundcover suits jujube's low-water profile and deters cabbage moth and aphid populations.
Practical considerations
Jujube thrives in dry, well-drained soil and tolerates heat and drought that would stress many companions. Thyme shares those preferences well, making it a compatible groundcover beneath jujube canopy where other plants might struggle. The combination works best in zones 6 through 10, where both plants are reliably perennial; in colder zones, thyme may need annual replanting or heavy mulching to overwinter.
Plant thyme 18 to 24 inches from the jujube trunk to avoid competing with surface feeder roots while still covering the drip zone. Thyme's low profile poses no shading competition for the tree. The pairing is most useful in orchard rows where suppressing bare soil matters; thyme slows moisture evaporation and deters cabbage moth and aphid populations that can colonize soft-stemmed plants nearby.
The main limitation is fruit-drop season. Jujube can shed fruit heavily in productive years, and dense thyme groundcover complicates harvest cleanup. Growers who hand-harvest may want to clear or cut back thyme beneath the canopy in late summer before fruit ripens.
