Companion pairing

Lettuce + Tomato

Plant together

Why this pairing

Lettuce planted at tomato's base benefits from afternoon shade as the tomato grows, extending the lettuce harvest into early summer. Different root depths avoid competition.

Practical considerations

Lettuce and tomato are a practical warm-season pairing, particularly in regions where spring transitions quickly to summer heat. Plant lettuce at the base of tomato transplants, keeping 8 to 12 inches between the lettuce heads and the tomato stem to allow adequate airflow. As tomato plants reach full canopy height in June and July, they cast afternoon shade that can lower soil temperature by several degrees, slowing the bolting that ends most spring lettuce harvests. The two crops occupy different root zones: tomatoes draw from 24 to 48 inches deep, while lettuce roots stay in the top 12 inches, so nutrient and water competition is minimal. The pairing works best in zones 6 through 9, where the shoulder season is long enough for lettuce to establish before tomatoes close the canopy. In short-season zones 3 to 5, the timing window is narrow and the benefit less reliable.
