Companion pairing
beneficialHot Pepper + Basil
Plant together
Why this pairing
Compatible heat-loving culture, similar water needs. Basil interplanted between hot pepper plants supports beneficial insects and reduces aphid pressure.
Practical considerations
Hot peppers and basil share enough cultural requirements that they slot naturally into the same bed. Both prefer warm soil (at least 60°F at planting depth), full sun, and consistent moisture without waterlogging. Starting both indoors and transplanting after last frost keeps their schedules aligned.
Interplanting basil between pepper rows at 12 to 18 inches spacing gives it enough light without crowding the peppers' root zone. The combination has a reasonable reputation for reducing aphid pressure, likely because basil attracts predatory wasps and other beneficial insects, though the effect is inconsistent and shouldn't be counted on as a primary pest management strategy.
Soil and fertility requirements are compatible. Both benefit from moderate nitrogen and respond well to mulching for moisture retention. The pairing is less useful in short-season climates where basil struggles to establish before cooler fall temperatures arrive.
