Companion pairing
beneficialRabbiteye Blueberry + Thyme
Plant together
Why this pairing
Thyme tolerates the acidic soil and full sun rabbiteyes need and supports beneficial insect populations.
Practical considerations
Rabbiteye blueberries thrive in acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 5.5) with full sun, conditions that would stress most herbs. Thyme is a practical exception: it tolerates low soil pH, drains well, and handles long stretches of direct sun without complaint. Planted at the drip line or between rows, low-growing thyme fills ground that would otherwise host weeds without competing aggressively for water. The flowering stems attract predatory and parasitoid insects, which helps reduce soft-bodied pest pressure on blueberry foliage and fruit. Spacing of 18 to 24 inches between thyme plants allows for air circulation and easy access during harvest. This pairing works best in established plantings where the blueberries are not still adjusting pH; introducing thyme before soil amendment is complete adds maintenance complexity without clear benefit. In containers or small-space plantings, thyme can crowd roots if not divided every two to three years.
