Yellow Raspberry + Garlic

Plant together

Why this pairing

Garlic's pungent root exudates discourage soil-borne fungi that cause raspberry root rot.

Practical considerations

Yellow raspberries and garlic share compatible soil requirements: both prefer well-drained, slightly acidic conditions in the pH 6.0 to 6.5 range. Garlic's sulfur-containing root exudates are thought to suppress Phytophthora and Pythium species, the fungi most commonly implicated in raspberry root rot, making this pairing most useful on sites with a history of wet feet or marginal drainage.

For timing, plant hardneck garlic in fall (October through November in most zones) so it establishes before raspberries break dormancy in spring. Space garlic cloves 6 to 8 inches from raspberry canes to limit root competition; raspberries are shallow-rooted and do not tolerate crowding near the crown.

The pairing offers less benefit in well-drained sandy loam with no prior fungal history. Also worth noting: garlic harvest in early summer coincides with raspberry fruiting. Plan row placement so harvest foot traffic does not disturb fruiting canes.
