Companion pairing
beneficialEverbearing Strawberry + Thyme
Plant together
Why this pairing
Creeping thyme suppresses weeds between strawberry plants without competing for moisture or nutrients.
Practical considerations
Creeping thyme forms a low, dense mat that crowds out weeds in the gaps between strawberry crowns without sending roots deep enough to compete with strawberry's shallow feeder roots. Both plants prefer well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0 to 7.0) and tolerate moderate drought once established, so irrigation schedules can align after the first season.
Plant thyme as a border or inter-row filler rather than directly against crowns; leaving 6 to 8 inches of clearance around each plant supports air circulation and may reduce gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) pressure. The pairing is most useful in beds where weed pressure is persistent and straw mulching is impractical or unavailable. It is less suited to renovated matted-row systems, where annual mowing and aggressive runner management disrupt established thyme plantings. In hill-system or raised-bed everbearing plantings, where beds remain in place for multiple seasons, the combination is more stable.
