June-Bearing Strawberry + Thyme

Plant together

Why this pairing

Thyme as an edge planting around strawberry beds repels worms and supports predatory insects.

Practical considerations

June-bearing strawberries prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5), and thyme tolerates similar conditions without competing aggressively for nutrients once established. The pairing works best as an edge or border planting rather than as an interplanted row companion, where thyme's low spreading habit could obstruct runner placement during the establishment season.

The beneficial dynamic operates through two mechanisms. Thyme's aromatic volatile compounds have documented repellent activity against cutworms and armyworms, which target strawberry crowns and foliage early in the season. Its small flowers also draw parasitic wasps and predatory beetles that suppress aphid and spider mite populations on strawberry plants.

For best results, establish thyme along bed perimeters the season before strawberries go in, or at the same time as bare-root crowns. The pairing is less useful in beds where runners are being trained aggressively for propagation, since perimeter thyme can impede runner-to-soil contact along bed edges.
